An orange extension cord on a similarly orange background. She puzzled over this adjacency in the corner of the supply room. She worked as a costume maker for the opera of a small liberal arts college. She drove the requisite station wagon of Swedish origin and owned a home with real wood trim, deep wood trim, that was older than her and had been refinished many times. She took the extension cord back to her machine and attempted to plug it in. The outlet was upside down in the wall and she fumbled with the cord a bit. Her coworker asked if she could turn the radio on. She agreed as the plug made solid contact with the wall and the sewing machine made a low humming sound.
