The first time people encounter Morten Viskums art they feel challenged. His work hold a unique position in the Norwegian art scene because the choice of materials, themes and artistic means can be said to differ largely from that found in other contemporary Norwegian art. Viskum works with a wide range of expressions from conceptually based objects, installations and performances, to painting, prints and photographs. People who have already heard of him might think of him as the artist who uses baby rats and paints with a dead persons hand (over time he has acquired several hands). These startling devices are some of the most prominent features of his artistic practice. His untraditional materials and technical choices provoke many people and create debate, yet also generate interest and curiosity.
