Another theme - Surrealism - links several pieces, and appeared without any prompting from us. In her essay "The Gates of Sleep," Lucy Ives suggests the two themes may be connected. After considering Vergil's Aeneas as a progenitor of empire, she goes on a deep dive into the mythology of Twin Peaks, David Lynch's decades-spanning Surrealist classic, in search of clues to illuminate the strange temporality of the present. Surrealist history gets reappraised in two reviews of recent shows: John Yau on avowed Surrealist (and cover star) Ted Joans (1928-2003), and Alex Zivkovic on the Whitney Museum's Sixties Surreal, while poems by Aaron Fagan and Peter Spagnuolo explore Reginald Marsh-like circus imagery and the language of wine tasting, respectively. Following our questionnaire on criticism published in Issue Zero, four art historians respond to questions in Issue Two on the subject of art history.
