“Photographoary: Photo-Mad Old Man A Turning 77 on 5.25.17” commemorates the exhibition of the same name held at Taka Ishii Gallery from May 25 until July 1, 2017.
The works center around Araki’s fundamental themes of Eros and Thanatos. Araki, who has been confronted with and overcome multiple illnesses such as prostate cancer and central retinal artery occlusion causing him to lose sight in his right eye, enriches his works by affirmatively incorporated his aging process.
“This is a time of the elderly. People who fight against aging, saying, “I don’t want to be seen as an old person,” are out. This is precisely the time to be proud of and exhibit the transformations caused by age. There are many things you can’t learn without aging. It’s natural that older people are more attractive than the young, because we’re experienced.” -Nobuyoshi Araki
