{"product_id":"black-ark-lee-scratch-perry","title":"Black Ark, Lee Scratch Perry","description":"\"The point of departure for the book Black Ark with Lee “Scratch” Perry (1936–2021),\r\na Jamaican musical and visual artist who was based in Switzerland, is a detailed\r\ninventory of photographs and writings (Spring 2021) from the Black Ark Studios in\r\nKingston, Jamaica, where Lee produced his music from 1973 on. He was a seminal\r\npioneer of dub, an electronic subgenre of reggae that uses sampling, looping,\r\nremixing, reverb and echoes to create new songs as well as rework and appropriate\r\npre-recorded songs and tracks.\r\nBlack Ark Studios was one of the cradles of dub. It’s also where Lee “Scratch”\r\nPerry’s musical approach found an enduring visual counterpart in the form of\r\ncontinuously evolving mural paintings and drawings as well as shape-shifting\r\nassemblages of records, instruments, found objects, posters, newspaper and\r\nmagazine clippings, and appropriated books. The artworks form actual layers upon\r\nlayers that are rhizomatically intertwined with the studio building itself as well as with\r\nthe furniture inside—and with Perry’s biography and persona.\r\nPerry created his very own, dense and eclectic world—a world that is documented in\r\nBlack Ark, before it disappears for good: the premises have recently been sold. The\r\nphotographic documentation of the studio was supplemented by efforts to secure and\r\npreserve Perry’s cultural objects as part of a joint project with various cultural\r\ninstitutions.\r\nBlack Ark which reflects the rhythm and layering effects of collage both in its content\r\nand the materials used to craft the book. Perry was involved in the conception of the\r\nbook in its early stages. It also interweaves various media and chronologies. The new\r\nphotographs of the Black Ark Studios will be juxtaposed with stills from old\r\ndocumentaries and archival photos.\r\nThe idea of a “house” serves as both a working hypothesis and a metaphor. It will be\r\nthe starting point and endpoint of various thematic strands, both visual and textual:\r\nfor example, the book will explore the Black Ark as a “spiritual yard” in the context of\r\nAfrican diaspora, as well as looking into archeomusicological aspects. Furthermore,\r\nextended captions by Perry’s biographer will provide the backdrop for a kaleidoscopic\r\npanorama of Perry’s eclectic and ingenious work.\"","brand":"Antenne Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":52694126199122,"sku":"AB8618","price":60.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0822\/0062\/5490\/files\/AB8618-black-ark-03.jpg?v=1776161542","url":"https:\/\/antennebooks.com\/products\/black-ark-lee-scratch-perry","provider":"Antenne Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
