When Angelyne met Buc-ee's: a delicious, high-flying notion, a meeting of the great, high-camp, provocative billboard minds. If I were to die in a car crash along the Interstate 40 corridor crossing the Southern U.S., a Buc-ee’s billboard would be to blame – specifically one in east Tennessee that reads WE’RE OFF TO SEE THE BEAVER. The message is merely a euphemism for: you have now passed the exit for the first of two Buc-ee’s along this route – good luck on your passage to the second. But it sounds (intentionally) like so much more. Many times I have tried to capture it, one hand on the wheel, the other fumblilng my iPhone, neither eye on I-40. I can’t be alone in that – Buc-ee’s IYKYK billboards are by design Southern roadside attractions for the meme era. If the Bucee’s beaver mascot is the Wizard of Oz in this scenario, the yellow brick road milestoned by billboards that swat at the Bible Belt with innuendo, then Angelyne, L.A.’s billboard queen, is its Glinda the Good Witch, supreme sprinkler of the fairy-dust notion that sex sells whether the product (say, gasoline) sells itself, or if there is no product at all. What would happen if Angelyne and Buc-ee’s joined forces for roadside spectacle? The world might combust. This zine is the roadmap to that. It's a documentary of a dream collab -- Angelyne x Bucee's: Made You Look.
