New York Then 1986–1992 brings together a
striking series of black and white portraits taken by
photographer Vivienne Maricevic in late 1980s and
early 1990s New York.
Working in close collaboration with her subjects,
Maricevic photographed trans performers, artists
and sex workers who inhabited the dressing rooms,
apartments and nightlife spaces of downtown
Manhattan and Times Square.
The photographs capture moments of conscious
self presentation where eroticism meets agency.
Bold, vulnerable and self possessed, the images reveal
individuals defining how they wished to be seen.
The first edition is screen printed in Mexico City,
giving the book a distinctive tactile quality rarely
found in contemporary photobooks.
