An excerpt from the introduction by the editors, a bit of aftercare in advance:
At the entry of the Cloaca Maxima, the “Great Drain” of Ancient Rome, there was a shrine to Venus: the Venus Clocina, goddess of the sewer. People knew that beauty is reliant on shit and that the divinity of the sewage system needed the blessing of the great goddess of pleasure. Hotter compost, brighter roses. Another thing the Romans knew: the “mouth of truth,” an ancient marble mask, said to bite off any liar’s hand, was also an entrance to the sewage system - our shit is the most honest thing we have.
